MOTELX starts it’s 13º edition today

The Brazilian film ‘Bacurau’, the presence of director Ari Aster and the 40th anniversary of ‘Alien – The Eighth Passenger’ will mark the 13th MOTELX – Lisbon International Horror Film Festival, which starts today.

The festival will occupy São Jorge cinema until the 15th and the program will highlight the presence in Lisbon of the American director Ari Aster, who will premiere the movie ‘Midsommar’ and give a ‘masterclass’ about ‘folk horror’.

Also noteworthy is the premiere of ‘Bacurau’, Brazilian production by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, awarded in May at the Cannes festival and already shown in July at the Curtas Vila do Conde festival.

This year, MOTELX will also mark the 40th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s debut ‘Alien – The Eighth Passenger’ (1979), featuring a restored, 4K copy, to which he adds the documentary ‘Memory: The Origins’ of Alien ‘, by Alexandre Philippe.


It will be premiered ‘The Golden Glove’ by German director Fatih Akin, screened at the Berlin festival.

Of Portuguese production, highlight to the premiere of the feature film ‘Make Me Company’, by Gonçalo Almeida, author of the ‘short’ ‘Thursday Night’, awarded in 2017 at the festival.

MOTELX will open today with the premiere of Tate Taylor’s ‘Ma’ and actress Octavia Spencer, and will end with Ant Timpson’s ‘Come to Daddy’ starring Elijah Wood.

The festival board asks viewers to leave home the triscaidecaphobia, that is, fear of number 13, because Friday will hold a special screening of ‘Friday 13’, a ‘1980 cult movie’ of Sean S. Cunningham.

This year will mark the 60th anniversary of Ed Wood’s horror sci-fi movie ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’.

In the ‘Lost Room’ section, the festival will devote attention to Portuguese cinema with the presence of two slasher films, one of the subgenres of horror cinema: ‘The Builder of Angels’, fiction of the plastic artist Luís Noronha da Costa, 1978 , and ‘Rasganço’ (2001), by Raquel Freire.
