The production is in charge of David & Golias.
“Variações” portrays the life of António Ribeiro, barber and figure of the Lisbon movement in the late 70’s,
pursuing his dream of becoming a singer and composer, despite not knowing a note of music.
The film focuses on the transformation process in the persona of António Variações, an eccentric and popular artist whose
career was interrupted by her death in 1984, “the producer says.
Variations was born in 1944 in Fiscal, Amares, having passed away in 1984.
The film recalls the period in which Variations, tired of waiting for an opportunity for the publisher, begins, “at his expense,” trying to build a career in the music world.
It took five years to become famous.
In May of 1983, it was one of the most popular of Portuguese artists, with more than 100 shows marked
for the summer.
His first album, “Guardian Angel”, was a phenomenon of sales and Variations makes his concert more appealing, in the Aula Magna, being the first part of Amália Rodrigues, his greatest idol.
In 1984, Variações records its second and last album, called “Give and Receive”.
He would die in June of that year, at the age of 39.
The film also touches on the love life of Variações, namely his relationship with Lisbon hairdresser Fernando Ataíde.
