Bacalhau Riberalves was distinguished by the MSC – Marine Stewardship Council with the Award Mar Para Sempre Leading Brand in Sustainable Fishing. This distinction recognizes the Bacalhau Riberalves as the brand of fishery products with a “greater number of references and volume of products with the MSC Blue Seal marketed in Portugal”.
Ricardo Alves, administrator of Riberalves, highlights the relevance of the distinction. “This award recognizes the commitment of Riberalves to best practices in sustainability in fishing and the process of Portuguese cured cod. By submitting the entire range of Riberalves Cod products to the MSC – Marine Stewardship Council certification standards, we are not only contributing to the future of a fundamental species, in particular, for the Portuguese gastronomic identity, as we are also appealing to a common responsibility, of defence of the Planet and ecosystems”.
The announcement of the award was made on Thursday, November 14, at the 1st edition of the Awards Mar Para Sempre 2024, which took place in Lisbon, at the Palácio Rocha do Conde D’Óbidos. The event is part of the celebrations of the 4th edition of the #MarParaSempre Week, which runs until November 17 under the motto ‘Your Choices, Our Future’; it also coincides with the National Day of the Sea (November 16) and precedes the World Fishing Day (November 21),
Alberto Garazo, Senior Commercial Manager Spain & Portugal of the MSC, framed the relevance of the Riberalves activity in the award. “For this company, the issue of sustainability is one of the pillars that guides all its activity. Its product is made from 100% wild fish and the importance and value of this protein, crucial for millions of consumers in various markets, can only be ensured through sustainable fishing, capable of defending the maintenance and future of the species. Currently, it is one of the most processing cod companies in the world and for the MSC program is a leading global brand and supplier of MSC-certified cod.”
Riberalves Cod has been subject to MSC – Marine Stewardship Council certification since 2010. This non-profit body sets globally recognized standards for sustainable fisheries and the seafood supply chain. Fisheries that represent 19% of the world’s wild marine catches are involved in the MSC certification program.
