“Mulheres de Almada” portrays female figures from the 15th to the 21st century

The book “Mulheres de Almada” by M. Margarida Pereira-Müller and Florbela Barão da Silva and illustrations by Isa Silva has just been launched, and under the seal of Emporium Editora.

The book covers the biographies of 49 women who have marked the life of the council of Almada from the 15th century to the present day, from the queen of Portugal Leonor de Avis to the workers in cork and washerwomen, from the sportswoman Almerinda Correia to the judoka Telma Monteiro, from the scientist Elvira Fortunato to midwife-nurse Graziela Maria Afonso, from singer Nela Ribeiro to Marta Miranda, from plastic artist Catarina Pé-Curto to researcher of studies on feminism Manuela Tavares, among many others.

As Inês de Medeiros, president of the Almada City Council, writes in the preface, “We have all been confronted with the fact that history is made by and for the winners. When the issue of women in history is addressed, the case is even more complex. However, a closer look is enough to realize that not only are they always present, but they are also actively present.”

M. Margarida Pereira-Müller was born in Portalegre, collaborates with several publications and blogs and has published several biographies, books of stories and legends and gastronomy (internationally awarded).

Florbela Barão da Silva was born, lives and works in Almada as a communication consultant with her personal brand. She writes articles in public relations publications and participates in entrepreneurship talks.

The illustrator Isa Silva works in illustration, graphic design and painting. Exhibitions, published books, children’s theater, creative awards, urban art and urban sketching are part of her path as a visual artist.
