After the success of its premiere at Casa das Artes in Famalicão, the play “Mulheres de Shakespeare” (“Shakespeare’s Women”) will take the stage at Teatro Helena Sá e Costa, in Porto, from the 11th to the 14th of October, at 9:30 pm.
The national tour will also pass through Viana do Castelo (November 18th at the Theater Festival), the Bragança Municipal Theater on December 6th and in 2024 it will be the turn of the São Luiz Municipal Theater, in Lisbon, from the 11th to the 14th of July.
It is a co-production of Ensemble – Sociedade de Atores, Casa das Artes de Famalicão, São Luíz TM-EGEAC and Teatro Municipal de Bragança. It is written by Fátima Vieira and Matilde Real, and directed by Carlos Pimenta on stage will be the actress Emília Silvestre and the singer Sofia Fernandes.
Female roles are notable in Shakespeare’s works. Although relegated to the background, due to contingencies that are certainly more social than dramaturgical, the English author shows us, despite everything, how they decisively influence the decisions of men, who assume themselves as the centre of decision-making and power.
After all, what does the feminine spirit represent and what is the relevance in Shakespeare’s work and how is it defined in an admittedly masculine context that prevented women themselves from appearing on stage? Is it just a counterpoint that allows the actions of men to be justified or, on the other hand, is their praise assumed by the bard as a kind of “escape from censorship” and the political and social contingencies of his time?
Using an actress who presents herself as a spirit of the feminine – summoning different characters and personalities – and a singer, the play seeks to analyze the issue of the presence of women in the scope of Shakespearean dramaturgy and, simultaneously, reflect on the issue of the feminine that determines carrying out the project.
