The Municipal Council of Immigrant Integration and Interculturality of the Municipality of Braga won the Municipal Award “Aristides de Sousa Mendes”, in the category “Social and Community Cohesion”, awarded by the General Directorate of Local Authorities (DGAL).
The award, part of the project “Nunca Esquecer” – National Program on the Memory of the Holocaust, aims to continuously encourage, in space and time, the symbolic and material adhesion of the Country, through Local Authorities, to this focused goal. in valuing Human Rights.
The news of winning the award was one of the subjects discussed during the meeting of the Municipal Council of Immigrant Integration and Interculturality of Braga, which took place at the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho.
This consultative body is made up of representatives of the City Council and immigrant associations, and aims to promote the consultation of immigrant associations, as well as individual immigrant citizens, in an inclusive approach, guaranteeing their rights and contributing to equitable and sustainable development of societies.
For Sameiro Araújo, vice-president of the City Council, the prize now awarded demonstrates that the Municipality “is on the right path to reach the various cultures installed in the city”. “Protecting the human rights of migrants is a cross-cutting political priority and all means must be put in place to ensure their integration into our community,” he said.
According to the vice-president of the Chamber of Braga, the Aristides de Sousa Mendes award “elevates the work that the Municipality believes to be essential and urgent for the promotion of potential benefits for all those who choose the city of Braga as their home”.
