Museum of the Presidency of the Republic marks its 85th anniversary with an exhibition by Paula Rego
The Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, in the Palace of Belém, in Lisbon, marks the 85th anniversary with the opening of an exhibition of works by the painter Paula Rego.
The exhibition “Da Encomenda à Criação. Paula Rego no Palácio de Belém” (“From Order to Creation. Paula Rego at the Palace of Belém“) will open on February 3 and brings together works created by the artist for the Palace of Belém, at the request of former President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio.
The museum recalls that, in 2002, the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio invited Paula Rego to create a set of works evocative of the life of the Virgin Mary, an order made in the context of the restoration of the Palace chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Belém.
“Da Encomenda à Criação. Paula Rego no Palácio de Belém” will be open from February 3 to May 3, at the Palácio de Belém.
Paula Rego, born in Lisbon in 1935, left Portugal as a teenager, during the Salazar dictatorship, to study at the Slade School of Art, in London, where she lived and has lived for more than 50 years.
The only female artist in the London School group, Paula Rego distinguished herself for a highly figurative and literary work, considered incisive and singular by art critics.
Paula Rego was distinguished in 2010 by Queen Isabel II, with the degree of Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for her contribution to the arts.
In 2016 he was awarded the Municipal Medal of Honor for the city of Lisbon, by the city council.
