Christmas songs for all ears
Lisbon Christmas Festivities
Christmas Festivities are coming, to fill the churches (and not only) with choirs, orchestras, ensembles, bands, soloists and also DJs.
This year, the musical program, free of charge, passes through three churches (in the parishes of Campo de Ourique, Misericórdia and Areeiro) and the Capitol.
There are four concerts and a DJ set to listen to, from baroque music, through electronic sounds, Portuguese music and famous songs by international artists between the 1930s and 1960s. A sound journey that is also a journey in time, transporting us to the birth of Jesus, to the circumnavigation of Magellan’s Iron Cross, to the bosom of the talented Bach family or to the times of swing and rock’n’roll.
With a vast repertoire, the Lisbon Cantat Chamber Choir opens the program on November 30th, presenting vilanchais and motets from the Renaissance era and traditional Portuguese songs recovered by composers Fernando Lopes-Graça, Eurico Carrapatoso and Fernando Lapa. The concert, under the direction of maestro Jorge Carvalho Alves, will take place in the Church of the Holy Constable at 21h.
In December, we took the music to two more churches: on the 6th, at the Church of Nossa Senhora das Mercês, with a concert by the Nova Era Vocal Ensemble & Orchestra 1755 dedicated to the compositions of the different musicians of the Bach family, over seven generations. On the 13th, in the Church of São João de Deus, with the project Sete Lágrimas and a program that revisits the circumnavigation trip of Fernão de Magalhães and Elcano, recreating traditional sounds from five continents. Concerts start at 9:00 pm.
The Capitólio, in Parque Mayer, hosts two shows. On the 7th, starting at 9.30 pm, the Luso-Angolan artist Batida and the Portuguese musician and composer Tigerman will star in a new DJ set, between electronic Afro and blues. The 14th is the turn of the band The Lucky Duckies, inspired by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin or Elvis Presley, with a festive repertoire, composed of Christmas classics, original songs and also a tribute to António Variações, marking 40 years since the artist’s death.
