Mário Lopes, drummer and composer Eborense, has just released a documentary about his debut album, QUIMERA, work associated with ecological values and animal protection and preservation.
In this documentary, Mário Lopes, musician linked to groups such as Orquestra Jazz de Évora, Monda, Cantadores do Alentejo, SevenDixie and Manuel Guerra, and who has worked with artists such as Rui Veloso, Vitorino, José Cid, among others, invites the public to know the history, concept and imaginary behind his first work, QUIMERA, from images and testimonies captured during the day the album was presented live at Teatro Garcia de Resende, in Évora.
Filmed and produced by Danilo Miranda Cares, the documentary follows Mário Lopes and his musicians throughout April 13, 2024, showing moments of concert preparation, interviews and presenting the key elements of the adventures of various creatures that, in retaliation for the oppression suffered at the hands of humanity, unite to create a super creature – Chimera. This record is a journey through the universe of Mário Lopes’ imagination, and his multifaceted music, with varied influences that cross times, cultures and geographies.
QUIMERA is an instrumental fusion album and a musical proposal composed of eight themes, where you can listen to sounds of progressive rock, metal, jazz, Cuban, Brazilian music, the Middle East and also the Balkans, resulting in a soundscape of cinematic nature. This soundscape intends to transmit a story of several animals that, after suffering at the hands of humanity, unite forming this “Chimera” that will carry out a reckoning. QUIMERA has been available on digital platforms since April 2024.
About Mário Lopes
Drummer and composer Eborense, rooted in the Filarmónica tradition, completed studies at the Regional Conservatory of Évora – Eborae Mvsica and Évora University.
It is connected to Orquestra Jazz de Évora, Monda, Cantadores do Alentejo, SevenDixie and Manuel Guerra. He has worked with artists such as Kepa Junkera, Chico César, Rui Veloso, Vitorino, José Cid, Celina da Piedade and Jéssica Pina.
Since 2011, he teaches drums at the Musicentro of the Salesian College of Évora. From 2019 to 2022 he was the conductor in the Band of the Philharmonic Association “24 de Junho” of São Miguel de Machede. He has developed several works, as a composer, for short films such as “Ghostown” by André Pereira and also for theatrical productions of the company “The Witch Theatre”, such as “Shitz” and “Oxygen”.
