On Santo António’s night, the party takes place on Avenue

Festas de Lisboa

The break was for two years, complying with the rules dictated by the pandemic, but this week Avenida da Liberdade is filled with the joy and colors of the Popular Marches.

With thin throats and formal dresses, Lisbon’s neighborhoods are getting ready for the longest of nights and for what is the highlight of the Festas de Lisboa.

In addition to the 20 Marches in the contest, which are joined by the already usual Children’s March “A Voz do Operário”, Mercados, and Santa Casa, this year the parade also has the participation of the Marcha Popular Vale do Açor as a guest. And there is another surprise: for the first time, the children of the Marcha Infantil das Escolas de Lisboa walk down the Avenue.

Also returning are the traditional Weddings of Santo António with 16 couples exchanging rings in this edition, under the blessing of the dearest Saint of Lisbon.

But these festivities are not only held in Marches. These days, Lisbon will be invaded by human body organs: between an eye, a brain, and a heart, the Australian company Snuff Puppets brings Human Body Parts to different squares and gardens in the city, with three sessions over three days ( 9th, 10th, and 11th of June).
