Applications for Santo António Weddings open on February 14th, Valentine’s Day.
In February we dated, and in June we got married!
The city invites all lovers to take part in one of its most beloved popular traditions, and one of the highlights of the Lisbon Festivities, promoted annually by Lisbon City Council and organized by EGEAC.
For the ceremony on June 12th, held between the Lisbon Cathedral and the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho (civil weddings), 16 couples will be selected and must formalize their applications between February 14th and March 27th.
The registration form – the ideal gift to give on Valentine’s Day – will be available at the Lisbon stores in Alcântara, Baixa, Entrecampos, Marvila and Saldanha.
Applicants for Santo António Weddings must meet the requirements set out in the general conditions of participation available on the EGEAC website, namely the presentation of proof of permanent residence in the municipality of Lisbon of one of the couple’s members.
The newlyweds will be treated to this great collective party, which involves many hundreds of participants, including a large cast of partners and sponsors who make this initiative possible every year.
The first edition of Santo António Weddings took place in 1958 at the Church of Santo António, bringing together 26 couples. An initiative sponsored at the time by Diário Popular that would be interrupted by the 1974 Revolution and later recovered, in 1997, by the Lisbon City Council – starting to include, in addition to the religious ceremony, civil weddings. Since then, 400 weddings have taken place (275 religious and 125 civil).
More than six decades later, the tradition continues with a new ceremony under the auspices of Lisbon’s most beloved matchmaker Saint, on June 12th.
