Natalia Lafourcade wins a Latin Grammy

A year after Rosalia made history as the first individual female artist in 13 years to win the top prize at the Latin Grammys, Natalia Lafourcade followed in her footsteps with a big win this year.

Portuguese musicians Camané and Mário Laginha, as well as Maria Mendes were nominated, but did not receive any distinction, on Thursday night.

Fado singer Camané and pianist Mário Laginha were nominated in the category of ‘Best Root Album’ in Portuguese, with the album ‘Aqui é se serossado’, from the fado repertoire.

Jazz singer Maria Mendes was nominated for the Latin Grammy for ‘Best arrangement’, with the theme ‘Asas Fechadas’, by Amália Rodrigues, who recorded on the album ‘Close to me’, with John Beasley and the Metropole Orkest from Holland , released in October 2019.

The show had neither a live audience nor a red carpet, and some of the performances featured band members and masked dancers.

Lafourcade’s victories included the best alternative song for ‘En Cantos’, in collaboration with iLe, and the best regional song for ‘Mi Religion’.

Rosalia won awards during the pre-broadcast of the ceremony, including the best urban song and best urban fusion performance for the hit ‘Yo X Ti, Tu X Mi’, sharing both awards with the song’s co-star, Ozuna.

The artist also won the best short music video with ‘TKN’, which features Travis Scott and helped the rapper win a Latin Grammy before winning a traditional Grammy.

Before Rosalia’s victory on the album of the year, Shakira had been the last solo woman to win the prize in 2006 for ‘Fijacion Oral Vol. 1’.

Other winners on Thursday were Alejandro Sanz, who won the album of the year for the second time in a row, thanks to ‘Contigo’, a tribute song to Joaquin Sabina; Ricky Martin won the best pop vocal album for ‘Pause’; and Chiquis, daughter of the late singer Jenni Rivera, won the best band album with ‘Playlist’.

Bad Bunny won the best performance of ‘reggaeton’ with ‘Yo Perreo Sola’ and Balvin won the best urban music album with ‘Colores’.
