National Council wants the classification of Fábrica Confiança in Braga

The Architectural and Archaeological Heritage Section of the National Council of Culture has decided to open the procedure for the classification of the former Trust Factory, in Braga, was announced today.

In a statement, the Office of Strategy, Planning and Cultural Assessment adds that, with the opening of this procedure, and until the final classification decision, the property “is legally subject to various types of protection measures, especially with regard to works and licensing. ”

Saboaria e Perfumaria Confiança, or Fábrica Confiança, was founded in 1894 and until 2005 produced soap, soaps and perfumes.

The building, says the statement, presents characteristics representative of nineteenth-century industrial architecture.

The National Council of Culture is the advisory body of the Ministry of Culture.

Most PSD / CDS / PPM in the Câmara de Braga wants to sell the Trust building, which was expropriated in 2012, still under the mandate of Mesquita Machado (PS).

The sale, by public auction, for the base price of 3.8 million euros, has already been approved by the Chamber and the Municipal Assembly.

The president of the Chamber, Ricardo Rio, justified the sale of Confidence with the lack of “own funds and European” to rehabilitate the building, considering that the conservation of the legacy of the soap factory “can be done by private because the specifications of the sale are strict in that regard. ”

However, a group of citizens filed an injunction, in the Administrative and Fiscal Tribunal of Braga, to halt the public auction.

The injunction has been accepted and the sale process is thus suspended.

According to the defenders of Confidence, that “is the last building that witnesses the process of industrialization of the city of Braga of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.”

In addition to the patrimonial question, they say that Fábrica Confiança is located “on the site of Via XVII (road of the Roman period between Bracara Augusta-Asturica Augusta) and in a parish (S. Victor) with 31 thousand inhabitants where there is no municipal cultural equipment”.
