Nazaré Challenge, the second stage of the giant wave surfing world circuit, will be played on Friday, the organization confirmed today.
Nazaré will receive for the third time a test of this circuit, which has two more stages, one of which has already been played in Hawaii, where won the Hawaiian Ian Walsh.
Australian Jamie Mitchell won the first edition of the Nazarene competition in December 2016 and the Brazilian Lucas Chianca last year in February.
The Nazaré Challenge waiting period runs from October 1, 2018 and lasts until the end of March 2019, and is now expected to start on Friday.
The other stage of the championship is scheduled for Mavericks, California, with its waiting period running from November 1 to March 31, 2019.
The Nazarene event will count on the participation of the Portuguese João de Macedo, António Silva, Nic von Ruup, Alex Botelho, Hugo Vau and João Guedes.
Each heat of the event, which has a prize money of $ 100,000 (88,715 euros, today’s exchange), will oppose six surfers for 45 minutes, qualifying for the next three rounds, with a prize of 1,000 euros for the protagonist of the most challenging wave.
