Nélson Évora, Fonseca and Pimenta Sportsman of the Year candidates

The Portuguese Confederation of Sport (CDP) today announced the list of nominees in five categories of the Sportsmen of the Year Award, with names such as Nélson Évora, Jorge Fonseca or Fernando Pimenta in the race for the male award.

The men’s category includes several medal names this year in European or World Championships, such as world judo champion Jorge Fonseca, Beijing 2008 Olympic champion Nelson Évora in the Triple Salto, or Fernando Pimenta, medalist in the canoeing world championships.

The list also includes names such as Jordan Santos (beach soccer), João Sousa (tennis), Miguel Oliveira (motorcycle), Júlio Ferreira and Rui Bragança (taekwondo), Gilberto Duarte (handball), Frederico Morais (surf) or Ângelo Girão ( hockey), besides Abílio Valente, in bocce, among many others.

In females, we highlight Inês Henriques (50 km march), Vanessa Marques (soccer), Catarina Costa (judo), Marta Paço, blind athlete of European surf, Teresa Portela (canoeing), Susana Veiga (swimming) or Marta Caride. (fencing).

In the category of young promise, women represent 13 of the 28 nominees, highlighting Evelise Veiga (athletics), Maria Martins (cycling) or Beatriz Sousa (handball), with footballer João Félix as the biggest name.

In the appointments of coaches, the national soccer coach, Fernando Santos, is next to names like Gabriel Mendes (cycling), Paulo Pereira (handball) or Rui Fernandes (canoeing).

The team list includes several national teams, from football to roller hockey, wrestling and adapted sports, as well as three teams from Sporting, in judo, handball and athletics, among other clubs.

From a list of more than 20 names in each category nominated by the federations, the finalists will be selected on January 14, 2020, before the 24th Sports Gala at Casino Estoril in Cascais, Lisbon district. , set for the 29th.
