New intermunicipal kennel advances this year in the district of Évora
The Intermunicipal Community of Central Alentejo (CIMAC) will advance this year with the construction of a kennel in Évora to welcome abandoned animals in the 14 districts of the district, the president of the organization revealed today.
“It is not easy to receive all the animals, especially after the prohibition of slaughter and, according to the needs identified, we intend to move towards the construction of an intermunicipal kennel,” said CIMAC President Carlos Pinto de Sá.
According to the mayor of Évora, the project is being developed by CIMAC in collaboration with the company GESAMB, which manages and operates the Intermunicipal System for the Appreciation and Treatment of Urban Waste in the District of Évora.
The new kennel, indicated the president of CIMAC, will be “born” in a land located in the landfill area of GESAMB, near Evora, the result of an investment of around 100 thousand euros, with funds from the Government.
“We are already preparing the public tender” for the works, said Pinto de Sá, referring that “if everything goes well during this year there will be construction.”
The mayor stressed that the intermunicipal kennel will “fill a gap” that exists in the district, explaining that “several municipalities, such as Évora, have municipal kennels, but there is still a very wide range of animals that do not have this kind of support” .
The space “will have two modules to host at least 50 dogs and also a hotel, walking and bathing areas and a zone for cats with the same characteristics,” he said, noting that the kennel will serve “those animals that do not find accommodation in the municipal kennels “.
The president of CIMAC and mayor of Évora noted that in the district capital “the municipal kennel no longer slaughtered animals before the new law came into force and that the new rules brought new challenges.
“In many cases, [the slaughtering] was the solution.” In order to be able to welcome new animals, those who were most debilitated or in worse condition were slaughtered and gave way to others.
The law prohibiting the slaughter of animals as a measure of population control took effect on September 23, 2018.
CIMAC covers the municipalities of Alandroal, Arraiolos, Borba, Estremoz, Évora, Montemor-o-Novo, Mora, Mourão, Portel, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Vendas Novas, Viana do Alentejo and Vila Viçosa.
