The author and composer Nino Galissa, a kora player, has announced a tour in Portugal for July. The artist from Guinea-Bissau will perform on the 17th, in Lisbon, at B.Leza, and on the 18th, in Porto, at Casa da Música.
The concert promises to bring the purest roots of Guinea-Bissau to the two main cities of the country, with two kora players, two singers and dancers and a percussionist, in a show in which everyone sings… and enchants!
These should be contagious nights, with one of the most sought-after artists of traditional African music for shows in Europe.
The Casa da Música concert is free, part of the summer program of that institution. Tickets for the show at B.Leza are available online, costing €10.
The concert
With his inseparable kora and a musical sensitivity that leaves no one indifferent, Nino presents us with the presentation of his latest album, but also explores the most iconic songs of his predecessors, sung in Mandingo, Creole, Fula, English, Spanish and Catalan.
The artist’s latest album, Africa Today, is a diary of hopes and dreams from which the Guinean singer and composer, who lives in Catalonia, projects the desire for an African continent free from hunger, poverty, war, disease and death, where music is positioned as an element of unity and wealth and an agent of peace.
The artist
Nino Galissa composes with his African roots adorned with various modern styles of Afro-pop and jazz. In his compositions, he integrates current sounds, working with the contemporaneity of traditional African music.
The artist is a descendant of the Mandinga people, who cultivate the tradition of the Griots (or Djelis), men who belong to families of storytellers, guardians of Mandinga music and culture.
His father, Buli Galissa, was the first musician from Guinea-Bissau to bring the Kora harp to Portugal, a 21-string instrument with a beautiful sound, which is played by members of these families.
The tour in Brazil
After the shows in Portugal, Nino heads to Brazil, where he will perform in several cities: Macapa, Belém, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia.
