Nissan participates in pioneering V2G project in the Azores

Developed in partnership with Galp, Eletricidade dos Açores (EDA), Nuvve, MagnumCap, DGEG, the Regional Directorate of Energy of the Azores and ERSE, the pilot currently underway on the island of São Miguel is the first to occur in Portugal with a European level scale.

Based on a decentralized logic of bidirectional energy flows, V2G technology allows an electric car to charge its battery or, alternatively, that same battery is a source to supply energy to the electric grid.

With this pioneering pilot in Portugal, Nissan reinforces its commitment to the path of Intelligent Mobility, where energy transition, decarbonisation and connectivity play a central role in creating a true Electric Ecosystem, which is changing the way in which we move and how we live.

The V2G technology will allow electric car users to have access to savings on their energy bill and to a revenue associated with the provision of services to the electric grid, positioning users as active agents in the provision of auxiliary services to the electric system.

Additionally, this technology can also contribute to a greater penetration of renewable energies through, for example, the possibility of charging the electric vehicle battery during the night, taking advantage of surplus wind energy

The pilot in progress since April is testing a fleet of 10 Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 from Eletricidade dos Açores and has already allowed to inject about 13.4 MWh into the network, energy equivalent to the average consumption of 15 houses per day.

The realization of this pilot contributes to the creation of a legal framework that allows to move from a pilot phase to a market phase in a short period of time, thus opening doors to new business models and new approaches to the national electricity market.
