22 APRIL | LISBON CCB
25 APRIL | PORTO Casa da Música

On the eve of marking 3 decades of recording career – his debut, Spirit Dance, dates back to 1993 – Nitin Sawhney continues to reflect on his present and future in his latest album, a profound reflection on a particular human condition that the self-explanatory title Immigrants.

The album was released in 2021 through Sony Music Masterworks and features the collaboration of a number of artists who identify as immigrants, who are children of immigrants or who want to support the cause of those who for multiple reasons are displaced in the world.

Sawhney, an Indo-British artist who has created a work whose soundtracks for TV and cinema, albums and live concerts cross-cultural boundaries, thus continues to reflect on a problem that had already inspired his acclaimed 1999 album Beyond Skin and for this had valid and important contributions from artists such as YVA, the Indian singer of Qawwali Dhruv Sangari, the British-Jamaican cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson, the Egyptian-British singer Natacha Atlas, the Canadian rapper Spek or the German violinist Anna Phoebe, among others.

On this delicate matter, Sawhney explained: “In recent years, there has been an unprecedented level of political confusion and negative representation of immigrants in major Western countries. North America and Australasia. As an artist, I have always avoided politics as much as possible. In music, didactic messages very rarely exert the same power as emotional expression. However, I have a strong conviction – that every newborn has the same value, regardless of who you are or where you come from.

It is this noble idea that underpins his international tour with Immigrants who will visit Portugal in 2022. It is a highly emotional and unmissable show by one of the most fundamental artists of his generation.
