On International Women’s Day, meet the most famous female figure in the seas
The latest data reveal that Portugal is below the European average in terms of gender equality. In order to raise awareness of this issue on International Women’s Day, SEA LIFE Porto presents you with the Kingdom of Salacia, the Roman Goddess of the Seas, in a statue full of meaning.
International Women’s Day is already on the 8th of March and came on the back of a demonstration for equal civil rights and in favor of women’s suffrage. To remember and address a theme that is both current and relevant, SEA LIFE Porto presents you with Salacia, a female statue full of power, who arrived in the realm of the Porto aquarium where sharks, turtles, and many other marine creatures swim.
The nymph of Roman mythology was promised marriage to the great king of the seas, Neptune, but before the wedding, she rebelled and hid at the bottom of the ocean. Neptune sent all the sea creatures in the world looking for her, and she was found by a dolphin, who convinced her to marry.
Salácia was then known as the queen of the oceans and can be seen at the famous Porto aquarium from Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm, and at the weekend, from 10 am to 7 pm. Don’t miss the opportunity to have fun with your family, and friends, or alone and discover the secrets of the seas!
