New light installation embraces Rua Direita, in Viseu

The work is included in the “A25 Cultural Axis” project and is financed by the CENTRO 2020 Operational Program

In recent days, the Historic Center of Viseu gained a new shine, through a light installation. Until the 31st of October, the inhabitants of the city of Viseu and its visitors have the opportunity to enjoy this artistic intervention in the open.

This initiative arises from a strategic partnership of cultural programming in a network between the municipalities of Viseu, Aveiro and Guarda, called “A25 Cultural Axis – Creation and Programming Network“, which also counts on the Center’s Tourism as an institutional partner.

The focus of this initiative is the appreciation of the main sites of heritage impact of the three promoting municipalities. Viseu chose Rua Direita to house this original artwork, which uses light as a natural resource.

Originating from a unique artistic intervention, the aim of this artistic window is to enhance the identity and heritage of this commercial artery in Viseu. Through this innovative approach, history and contemporary art are intertwined, resulting in the projection of the heritage legacy of Rua Direita.

According to Luzo, author of the installation, “the ‘Rua Direita’ project is an irreverent vision of a young resident of the Historic Center of Viseu“. The artist adds that, through this initiative, “it seeks to return to the place the brightness and color of the past“. Luzo also emphasizes that “the neon, inspired by the old gas illuminated signs, is a tribute to the commerce that inhabits it“.

The creation of this new route for the interpretation of community symbols and the municipality’s identity allows visitors to reflect on the entire physical architecture of the city center, and not just its buildings or monuments.

These days, in Rua Direita, the promotion of the appreciation and usufruct of a relevant group of civil architecture properties of classified heritage interest, such as the Solar dos Treixedos and the Casa dos Primes, is reinforced.

It was also part of the launch of this initiative to promote sustainable processes, both in terms of energy and in the materials used in the facilities, thus approaching younger audiences.
