The World Press Photo organization announced the 45 winners from 28 countries, selected from the finalists in various categories of the international photography and photojournalism award.
The image of Nuno André Ferreira who was nominated in the contest was captured in September 2020 and shows, in two planes, a child inside a car, and in the distance the clipping of the flames in a fire that started in Oliveira de Frades (Viseu) and extended to neighboring counties.
The Photography of the Year award went to an image taken by Danish photographer Mads Nissen, on August 5, 2020, of Brazilian Rosa Luzia Lunardi, 85, to be embraced by nurse Adriana Silva da Costa Souza, at Viva Bem home, in São Paulo, Brazil.
Reports on the explosion that destroyed part of Beirut, Lebanon, the dispute in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the fires in the Amazon, African migrants in Italy, and a palliative care unit in France were other topics that competed for the World photography awards Press Photo, in an edition marked by covid-19, in the works of several of the candidates.
The World Press Photo awards were created in 1955 in Amsterdam and are still considered the most prestigious for photojournalism.
