Maestro Nuno Coelho

Young National Orchestra of Spain

To mark the beginning of the 40th-anniversary celebrations, the Young National Orchestra of Spain (JONDE) will carry out its first annual tour from January 11 to 16, 2023. The Portuguese conductor Nuno Coelho, current director of the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias ( OSPA), will lead JONDE in four concerts, which will take place in Zaragoza (January 11th), Madrid (January 12th), Lisbon (January 14th) and Porto (January 16th).

To the CCB’s Grand Auditorium, the Portuguese conductor Nuno Coelho, one of the most internationally recognized Portuguese musicians, brings a program of unavoidable pieces from the symphonic repertoire, such as the suite The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky and the Heroica by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The Young National Orchestra of Spain is an orchestra dedicated to training young musicians through the practice of symphonic and chamber repertoire. It was created on October 17, 1983, by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, its first director being Edmon Colomer. In 1996, on the occasion of the centenary of Robert Gerhard’s birth, JONDE was invited to participate in the Proms in London, thus becoming the first Spanish orchestra to participate in this important festival. Among the guest conductors are Carlo Maria Giulini, Jesús López Cobos, Víctor Pablo, Peter Maag, Josep Pons, Alberto Zedda, Arturo Tamayo, Juanjo Mena, and José Luis Temes, among others.

Among the musicians that make up JONDE, five of them, from the Orquestra Giovanile Italiana (OGI) and the Jovem Orquestra Portuguesa (JOP), will participate as guests through the MusXchange Exchange Program of the European Federation of Young National Orchestras (EFNYO). The exchange project responds to JONDE’s active involvement in transnational networks, through which it intends to promote cultural exchange and contribute to mobility in the labor market.
