The Algarve “is King” in November
with a collective debut, but there is also a double concert and two major festivals
November is a strong month for theatre in Loulé, with two plays debuting that focus on the Algarve region, one is Al_Gharb, by Teatro Meridional and the other – Quando a Sul / O Azul / Luar – brings together for the first time in a collective, the Colecta ’23, several theatre structures in the Algarve.
Thus, on the 4th of November, the Meridional Theater seeks new latitudes to the South, in an exercise of searching in this planted seaside territory, going through the evocations of the people of the sea, the dances held, the corridinhos, the Flower Torches festivals, the Sovereign Mother… The show “Al_Gharb” premieres at 9 pm, in co-production between Cineteatro Louletano and Teatro das Figuras.
On the 5th, there is fado, with Al Mouraria, a historic group from the municipality of Loulé, led by guitarist Valentim Filipe. The concert, at 5 pm, marks 20 years of this formation that excellently celebrates Fado, be it in its most traditional form, or in a more modern “wave”.
On the 7th and 8th, the company Formiga Atómica brings four sessions for schools to Cineteatro Louletano, at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm, with the play “O Estado do Mundo (when you wake up)”. A work that is above all a warning, highlighting the cause-effect relationship between small gestures and major consequences. Using household utensils, electronic devices, and essential everyday goods for all of us – themselves responsible for climate change –, the show highlights an idea of paradox: between what we defend on this topic and our incapacity to give up everyday behaviors. The session on the 8th has Portuguese Sign Language.
On the 9th, at 9 pm, the Bar at Cineteatro Louletano hosts another edition of “Conversas à Quinta”, this time with Aida Tavares, former Artistic Director and Executive Director of Teatro São Luiz, in Lisbon. Loulé will bring a first-person account of its 20-year experience in one of the most relevant theatres in the country, proposing to analyze the particular situation of the cases of municipal theatres, trying to understand what we can take from this experience for other equipment or institutions and what type of strategies can be adopted for the future.
On November 10th, at 9 pm, a new premiere. It is “ Quando a Sul / O azul / Luar”, a collective work that involves a single creation of multiple artistic structures from the Algarve region linked to theatre (ACTA-A Companhia de Teatro do Algarve, A Fera Teatro, Ar Quente, Artis XXI, Sin-Cera Teatro, Te.Atrito, TEL- Teatro Experimental de Lagos and Casa da Cultura de Loulé). The work is directed and staged by Nuno Pino Custódio, in co-creation with Colecta’23, which is based on the observation of the same reality, close, intimate, and local, but which manifests itself poetically through the universal distance of the art of theatre. The piece starts from a reality made of contrasts, polarities, paradoxes, conflicts, and disarrangements, but also of harmonies and virtues.
This is the first creation of ColecTA’23 – Colectivo Teatral do Algarve – an innovative regional creation and training project, conceived by Mákina de Cena, bringing together several actresses, actors and artistic structures with the same desire: to build a joint path and create other possibilities for performing theatre in the Algarve. The play is a co-production between Cineteatro Louletano, Auditorium Carlos do Carmo de Lagoa, Centro Cultural de Lagos and Teatro das Figuras, in Faro.
On the 12th, we turn to music again with a high-level double concert, bringing an extension of Misty Fest to the Algarve. In their areas, they are two highly respected elements in the context of Brazilian music. Directly from Brazil, singer and composer Anna Setton and composer and pianist Salomão Soares arrive in Loulé. Anna has been touring Europe, while Salomão will present his first solo album live: Interior.
On the 13th, the “Caderno Diário” launches at the Escola Profissional de Alte, a project by LAMA Teatro where outbursts, love stories, secrets, noughts and bounds will be explored. Students will be led to think about their environment and what they would change in their school and on their street.
On the 14th, workshop for secondary schools in the municipality of Loulé. We’re talking about “As Cartas Ridículos do Senhor Fernando e os Suspiros Líricos da Menina Ofélia”, a play staged by ACTA – The Algarve Theater Company – which takes the stage at Cineteatro Louletano on the 15th, also for schools, at 10:30 am. This workshop, directed by director Luís Vicente and aimed at secondary school students, will take into account, above all, subjects that are not covered in class records and that are fundamental for the creation of theatrical work. The 15th play includes a conversation with the young audience at the end.
Also on the 14th, another session of the French cinema cycle, this time with a comedy, “Fragile”. A romantic story, about desire, passion and frustration, to be seen in the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium, at 9 pm.
On November 17th, at 7 pm, at Cineteatro Louletano, there will be an opera in the cinema version. This is the classic “La Traviata”, by Giuseppe Verdi. It is a broadcast of the show recorded at the Met Opera in New York, which is part of the theatre’s award-winning Live in HD series.
The following day, on the 18th, at 11:30 am, in the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium, another edition of the “Crescendo” concerts, a moment in which diverse repertoires and different instruments come together, in a spontaneous way to show the work of students and teachers from the Loulé Music Conservatory – Francisco Rosado.
On the 19th, we continued with music, with the closing concert of the Cycle of Philharmonic Bands – Loulé Concelho, organized by the Sociedade Filarmónica Artistas de Minerva (as part of its 147th anniversary). This event proposes two bands from the Algarve, Sociedade Musical e Recreio Popular de Paderne and Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense, in an opportunity to showcase the work of very young musicians, directed by two young maestros, Tiago Pires (Paderne) and Gabriel Rodeia (Portimão).
Between November 20th and 30th, the Cadernos de Campo, by Mónica Samões and José Pelicano, were “written”. Cadernos de Campo is a project developed over two weeks in a school context with a class of children from the 1st cycle (4th year). The project, in a casaBranca production, will result in the creation of a collection of sound pieces made with and by children, about the Natural World and the Landscape.
On the 22nd, Wednesday, at 9 pm, Saint Cecilia’s Day is celebrated, the patron saint of musicians. For this, the teacher from the Loulé Music Conservatory – Francisco Rosado treated the public to an exceptional concert at the Cineteatro Louletano, in a celebration of classical music, on this date with a special symbolism.
Almost reaching the end of the month, between November 23rd and 26th, the return of a very special festival, produced in-house. It’s Som Riscado, a Music and Image Festival, which is in its 8th edition. This year, there are some big names, such as The Gift (a concert with Audio Description, for people who are blind or have low vision) and Stereossauro, but always maintaining the festival’s basic concept, with approaches that include multimedia and visual components as premises. mandatory. As usual, the festival is spread across several venues in the city, with the Cineteatro Louletano as its epicentre. Som Riscado also includes a focus on public participation, encouraging workshops and interactive installations.
On the 29th, there is “Mão Verde” at Cineteatro Louletano, a quartet of musicians who provide guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion, drums and voices and which have Capicua as one of the main elements. In two sessions aimed at schools (preschool and 1st cycle), at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm, “Mão Verde” invites green and mature people (teachers) to dance as if no one was watching, while learning more about herbs, butterflies, seasonal fruit and everything that has to do with nature.
From November 30th to December 3rd, Marlene Barreto leads an artistic residency of performing arts, for women. The residency “Feminism, an instrument for a new Democracy” is aimed at women (cis, trans), non-binary people and/or those questioning their identity and all people who defend a feminist perspective. Registrations are accepted until November 20th, via email gerardopessimismo.mescla@gmail.com.
Closing the month, and heading into December, we also have the Contrapeso Festival, which is in its 3rd edition. Contrapeso – which this year is under the theme Generations – is organized by the Associação Mákina de Cena, based in Loulé, and will once again invade several spaces in the city (Cineteatro Louletano, Auditorium do Solar da Música Nova, Casa da Mákina, Casa da Cultura, among others), with a multidisciplinary program of theater, jazz and poetry, and various mediation actions, such as workshops, masterclasses and post-show conversations.
