“The Bandstand, the love story of Ana and Sebastião”

It was telling a story that Rogério Charraz presented yesterday, at Teatro da Trindade, in Lisbon, his most recent work.

O Coreto” has the voice and the Acoustic Guitar of Rogério Charraz, as narrator José Fialho de Gouveia, and the musicians Carlos Lopes on the Accordion, Jaume Pradas on the Drums, Luís Pinto on the Bass, Paulo Loureiro on the Keyboards and Clarinet, João Rato on the Guitars, André Conde on the Trombone and Sérgio Charrinho on the Trumpet.

The story goes like this:

Sebastião was a boy who was born and raised in the waist of a big city, son of Diamantino, a man born and raised in the village. Sebastião had never had time for anything, it was just working, there was no time to read, to go to the doctor, the snail always stayed by the promise …

The turnaround in Sebastião’s life took place with the arrival of a registered letter, where the landlord tells him that the rent will increase and Sebastião sees his life badly stopped and decides to return to his father’s land. He goes by train and at the sound of “Quando a chuva cai na TerraSebastião goes on observing the landscape until he reaches the village where his roots are.

When he arrived he went to revisit the places of his childhood, Tasca do João, see Isaura, Chico Pintainho, at Tasca do João he felt at home and at the sound of “Abaladiça” they were exchanging abaladiças” (toast) for everyone’s health how much are in the tavern and in the city.

The theme “Um Dia no Coreto” served for Sebastião to review his favourite spots, one of the most preferred was Coreto, arriving there and looking to the side he recognizes Ana and, after gaining courage, went to talk to her.

Everything went well for Sebastião, he found Ana again, they were in the summer, and at Tasca do João he decided to give Ana a serenade, and with the verses and the music of “A Romaria” and “Põe um Beijo nos meus lábios”, Sebastião and Ana fall in love with each other and life smiles again.

The whole village was already getting used to their love, to seeing them always together, one of these people was Ana’s mother, who, because Sebastião does not belong to the village, is afraid that her daughter will suffer, just as she suffered, because she also fell in love with a visitor and then left leaving her pregnant with Ana. When she saw the direction their story was taking, she remembered her own story and we heard “No Coreto cá da Aldeia”.

Sebastião is so in love that he already thinks about growing old with Ana and sings and enchants the audience with “Quando Nós Formos Velhinhos”, a magnificent poem masterfully interpreted, accompanied by a video featuring Ruy de Carvalho and Eunice Munhoz.

But all the stories come to an end, the summer is ending, the emigrants have moved to the host countries, the village has become empty and Sebastião, raised on the edge of a large city, has begun to feel the anguish of the isolation of the interior.

With “Olá Meu Velho Amigo”, “No Natal” and “Senhor Prior” the emigrants arrive again to spend Christmas, the village comes alive, Christmas passes, the emigrants leave and the village is deserted again, the time has cooled, the holidays are over and Ana’s mother expresses her doubts about Ana’s relationship with Sebastião to the priest of the village.

Sebastião knows he has to talk to Ana, ask her to accompany him, go to the city, but at the sound of “Feita este Chão” sung by Luísa Sobral, Ana tells him that he cannot leave, that his roots are there in the village and the mother has to take care of her.

After talking to Ana he realized that there was still someone to ask for advice, his father Diamantino and so he went to talk to him, opened his heart, his doubts, but his father did not tell him what to do, with the theme “Leave your heart” just tells you to listen to the heart.

Sebastião left for the city, Ana stayed in the village, but both were thinking that there was going to be a return, that they would have to find a solution, they sang “Vou estar aqui”.

The theme “Quando formos Velhinhos” is narrated by Ruy de Carvalho, to whom a heartfelt tribute is paid. Eunice Munhoz was unable to attend, but she was also applauded for her participation in the video.

This is the wonderful story of Sebastião and Ana because I hope, there will be a solution, written by José Fialho de Gouveia and Rogério Charraz, also had the fundamental help of Luísa Sobral, producer of the album.

Rogério recognizes the work of João Monge, who is also in the audience, for everything he has done for music, for his work with other artists, Trovante, Ala dos Namorados.

He thanks the Teatro da Trindade for welcoming them, because “… it took a huge gymnastics to make it all go well …“.

To the delight of the audience, who only asked for “Mais uma, mais uma”, Rogério Charraz and Luísa Sobral returned to sing “Abaladiça”, followed by “Quando Te Vi”, a theme by Luísa Sobral and “Quando Nós Formos Velhinhos”, they made the whole audience singing, claping, there was laughter and tears. It was a perfect night when the audience surrendered to a love story.

Rogério Charraz thanks the audience, a full house, and says “… and were it not for the time that we live, we would live a unique moment in the Theater, as it would embrace each one of those present, since September 6, 2020, that we didn’t step on the stage all together… ”, not being able to call all the musicians in front of the stage and invited the audience to imagine that he had a glass in his hand, asked to raise his arm and gave an “Abaladiça” to everyone who was in Tasca João, as well as at the Teatro da Trindade.
