Mother’s Day at the Royal Treasury Museum
Portraits of Love and Royal Secrets
On the first weekend of May, the Royal Treasury Museum celebrates Mother’s Day in a setting worthy of royalty, with activities that combine tradition, art and affection.
With a workshop tour that allows you to create the perfect gift and a staged tour where the secrets of the king’s goldsmith are revealed, the museum holds two activities to honor those who are the true queens.
On Saturday, May 3, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the “Miniature Portraits of Love” workshop tour allows mothers and children to create small works of art together: portraits that are also jewellery. Inspired by the portraits of kings and queens, and the relics of Portuguese goldsmithing, this activity transforms memories into symbolic pieces, which result in a special and personalised gift that brightens every Mother’s Day.
On Sunday, May 4, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, families will be taken on a staged tour of the past of Portuguese royalty, where never-before-revealed secrets will be revealed. During the tour “The King’s Goldsmith and the Marquise Maria de Sousa”, the king’s goldsmith will share the stories behind some of the museum’s most iconic pieces, while being accompanied by a charismatic character with many captivating stories to tell: the Marquise Maria de Sousa.
The Royal Treasury Museum also has a permanent exhibition consisting of collections of jewellery, insignia and decorations, coins and pieces of civil and religious goldsmithing, which can be visited every day, starting at 10 am, in the west wing of the Ajuda National Palace. In celebration of Mother’s Day, on May 4, all mothers accompanied by their children will receive a 50% discount on the general admission ticket to the museum.
