The meeting of the artist couple Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes

From the 1st to the 28th of February, anyone visiting the Amoreiras Shopping Center will have the opportunity to witness, through a special photographic record on display there, the great meeting between the artist’s Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Arpad Szenes and João Cutileiro, which took place in Lisbon in the 1950s.

A partnership between the Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation and the João Cutileiro Art Center, the exhibition reveals Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, one of the most internationally renowned Portuguese visual artists, and her husband, the Hungarian painter Arpad Szenes, through the eyes of by the famous sculptor João Cutileiro. In the images, it is possible to see a couple of artists walking through the streets of Lisbon, from Príncipe Real to the Bairro das Amoreiras, passing very close to what would one day, in 1985, become the Amoreiras Shopping Center.

This registration took place shortly after Maria Helena Vieira da Silva met the doctor José Jacinto Cutileiro, father of the Portuguese sculptor, in the early 1950s. political reasons, while Vieira da Silva, already with numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, requested, for the second time, the reinstatement of his Portuguese citizenship, which, again, would be denied him.

Cutileiro, then a teenager, made a portrait of Vieira da Silva that, years later, he saw displayed on the wall of the artist’s studio in Paris. Only later, in 1956, the year in which the couple became French, did these photographs of the painter and her husband appear, in one of the few moments when the three were together in Lisbon.
