The Mêda+ Festival returns to the city of Mêda next week, celebrating its 11th edition from July 24th to 26th, with a special warm-up scheduled for Wednesday, the 23rd.
Promoted by a non-profit youth association, the event establishes itself as a space for democratic access to culture, bringing together Brazilian music, community, and intergenerational sharing, with free admission and camping.
According to André Pereira, from the organiser, this commitment has been one of the festival’s hallmarks: “The financial challenge involves eliminating a source of revenue from the outset, but it opens the door to several partnerships that would otherwise not have been possible with a ticketing system. With the values we’re working with, we feel that the purpose that has distinguished us since 2010 is essential to preserve.”
Over four days and three stages—Pé em Triste, Mercado, and Meda+—the festival presents a lineup that combines established artists with emerging voices in the Portuguese music scene. Vitoria Vermelho, Mêda Training Orchestra, Evaya, 800 Gondomar, Carlos Raposo, Romeu Bairos, Félix Gambino (DJ Set), Emmy Curl, Humana Taranja, MAQUINA., Tyroliro, Girls96, Rossana, Ohxala (DJ Set), Manga Limão, Bombazine, Them Flying Monkeys, Anti-Medo, Conferência Inferno, Marlow Diggs, Bia Maria and Academia Sénior de Mêda, Mike El Nite (DJ Set), Amaura, Quadra, and Capicua are the featured artists.
For the festival organisers, the lineup selection is the result of “constant work to give equal attention to established artists in the alternative scene and emerging new projects. Portuguese music is in a great phase, which makes our work much easier and, at the same time, makes the decision more difficult.”
In addition to music, the Mêda Exhibition Centre hosts workshops in ceramics, pottery making, painting, photography, and watercolour. “The idea arose from the need to include an alternative to the municipal pool in the daily program. This year, with the larger Metamorfose festival the event hosted, this appetite was even more intense.”
Another highlight is the wine tastings with commentary from local producers, which “also serve to promote their products to an unlikely audience,” emphasises the executive.
One of the most symbolic presentations will be the collaboration between Bia Maria and the Mêda Senior Academy, which, according to André Pereira, “takes on special importance because it reinforces several characteristics that we try to promote in the region and that have been fundamental in the symbiosis between Mêda+ and the entire community.”
After 11 editions, the festival’s identity has consolidated itself on the national circuit: “When the festival was interrupted in 2018, we received many expressions of support in various forms. We realised that Mêda+ had far exceeded our initial expectations in 2010 and reached audiences of all ages.”
The future of the event will be realistic and true to its DNA: “We don’t expect to grow much without other support. The goal is to maintain the festival’s identity, but to do so with greater financial stability and to be able to increase quality on several levels, without daydreaming.”
