Oceans: Unesco and CEiiA create summer school in Matosinhos

11 a 14 julho

Ocean Literacy & Collaboration

This initiative, which is taking place between the 10th and 14th of July, in Matosinhos, also counts on the collaboration of the European Union, the Municipality of Matosinhos, and the Collaborative Laboratory + Atlantic (CoLAB + Atlantic).

For 5 days, 20 national and international Ph.D. and Master’s students will receive training from national and international experts on the importance of ocean sustainability. During this period, participants will have classes, but will also have case study visits such as the Matosinhos Fishing Dock, APDL, and CIIMAR, among others.

At the end of the week’s work, participants will have to present ideas to solve some of the issues related to the fisheries sector and the sustainability of the oceans, and how coastal cities can contribute.

To promote ocean literacy and improve ocean sustainability, the European Commission and IOC-UNESCO have started an EU-wide collaboration, the EU4Ocean Coalition. This initiative, which takes place within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), will feature moments of theoretical learning, but also practical approaches and study visits, among others.

The CEiiA, in close partnership with the Collaborative Laboratory + Atlantic (CoLAB + Atlantic), has been developing several initiatives to involve the new generations in the search for solutions for more sustainable oceans.

In this successful path, it developed the INNOVATHON – Ocean Edition, which was an event that took place during the UNOC in Lisbon, on the beach of Carcavelos and which had more than 150 young people, but we also participated in the “Winter School – about Ocean Literacy & Collaboration”, organized by UNESCO, in Venice, in December 2022.

It was in this context that CEiiA and CoLAB + Atlantic challenged UNESCO and the European Union through the EU4Ocean initiative, to jointly organize a “SUMMER SCHOOL” focused on the importance of the fisheries sector for the sustainability of the oceans.

Matosinhos City Council supported this initiative from the beginning, as it recognizes the importance of supporting international Ph.D. and Masters students to expand their knowledge on ocean literacy, develop new skills and strengthen collaboration.
