Olivia Rodrigo back with “vampire”

the first single taken from their upcoming album, “GUTS”

Grammy-winning artist, acclaimed singer/songwriter Olivia Rodrigo is back with “vampire“. This emotionally raw song is the first single taken from the 20-year-old artist’s much-anticipated second studio album, “GUTS“, which hits stores on September 8th.

Produced and co-written by Daniel Nigro (also Rodrigo’s main creative partner on the 4-platinum “SOUR” album), “vampire” marks a break with the dreamy minimalism of previous hits, such as the single “drivers license” (5 platinum). For this purpose, “vampire” starts with quiet intensity before exploding into an epic – larger than life – build on pulsing drum beats and magnificently frenetic piano work. As the song takes on a wild speed, Rodrigo reveals his sophistication as a vocalist and lyricist, telling a story of the kind of toxic romance that drains your very life force.
Directed by celebrated artist/director/photographer Petra Collins, the video for “vampire” made its world premiere on MTV Live, MTVU, and MTV’s global network of channels, as well as on billboards in Paramount Times Square. Collins previously directed Rodrigo’s video for “brutal” (2 platinum) and earned a GRAMMY® nomination for her work in the video for “good 4 u” (4 platinum).

“I got upset about a certain situation and I went into the studio by myself and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just came out of me – almost like an out of body experience,” she recalls. “It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was going to turn into a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we mixed the lyrics with these big drums and unexpected tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreaking song you can dance to.”

Partly written at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City, “GUTS” primarily came to life in Nigro’s garage studio in Los Angeles. While each song intensifies the emotional honesty that has always imbued his storytelling, the album sees Rodrigo expanding his expressive palette and revealing entirely new dimensions to his artistry.

“For me, this album is about growing pains and trying to figure out who I am at this point in my life,” says Olivia Rodrigo. “I feel like I grew up 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20 – it was such an intense period of strangeness and change. I think this is all just a natural part of growing up, and I hope the album reflects that.”

Olivia Rodrigo received seven GRAMMY® nominations – including nominations in each of the four main categories – and took home Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 64th GRAMMY® Awards. She was also named Breakthrough Artist at the American Music Awards, Woman of the Year at Billboard’s 2022 Women in Music Awards, and Songwriter of the Year at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards and Variety Hitmakers. It also received seven Billboard Awards, a Brit, a Juno, and an NME Award, while “Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u (a SOUR film)” won Best Music Documentary at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
