The Portuguese Academy of Cinema announced today the opening of the entries for the Sofia Student Award 2018, which will have the first three categories announced on December 13, at a ceremony to be held at the Teatro Municipal Rivoli, in Porto.
This is the fifth edition of the Sofia Estudante Prize, an initiative that aims to promote the realization of short films among students of university and technical higher education, with the support of the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA).
The applications run until November 2, and students can register through the site, sending two works, with a maximum duration of 20 minutes.
The prize covers the categories of Fiction, Documentary, Animation and Experimental.
This year, for the first time, the Sophia Estudante Award for Best Poster will also be presented.
On November 2, the nominees will be revealed and, on December 13, the top three will be known for each of the identified categories, which will receive a certificate. The first place in each category will also receive a Sophia Estudante trophy.
All winners on December 13 are still in the running for the first screening of the Sophia Awards Jury and four of them will be chosen as nominated at the Sophia Awards Ceremony in March 2019.
The short film winner of the first place is awarded five thousand euros by the NOS, with lighting material by Cinemate and image material by PLANAR, for the production of a new ‘short’.
The fifth edition of the Sophia Estudante will have two masterclasses subordinated to the theme ‘The Sound in the Cinema’.
The first will be given by Nelson Ferreira, the lusescending sound editor nominated for the 2018 Oscars, in the category of Best Sound Editing, for the film ‘The Form of Water’.
The second ‘masterclass’ will be in charge of Tom Fleishman, New Yorker’s re-recording mixer, five times nominated for the Oscars, and winner of the 2012 edition in the category of Best Sound Editing for the film’ The Invention of Hugo ‘by Martin Scorsese.
