TEC hosts this show by the Teatromosca group after the presentation at Teatro Municipal Mirita Casimiro, a few years ago, of The American Trilogy, one show per year, recognizing the work of the Teatromosca company and its coherent evolution over the last few years.
“The Protected”, text by Elfriede Jelinek, unpublished in Portugal, based on a real event – the presence in Austrian territory, at the end of 2012, of around 100 refugees of various nationalities seeking asylum -, deals with the careless way, It is cowardly and unacceptable how the Austrian State decided to treat this tragic occurrence, and the immediate and simultaneous anger of far-right groups regarding the presence in Vienna of this group of foreigners. The text has been revised by the author, seeking, in a way, to expand the subject of the play towards other times in the History of Humanity, creating new possibilities for articulation with current subject matter. The reflective nature of the entire ensemble seems to support the idea that humanity changes little or nothing and does not learn from its own mistakes. Essentially, the author exposes the corrupting processes that powerful people use worldwide, using their influence with others, and to achieve benefits that they would not otherwise have.
The show is based on this text by the acclaimed Austrian author, with a translation signed by Anabela Mendes, who also assumes the role of dramaturg in this project, with staging by Pedro Alves and an original soundtrack, performed live by cellist Joana Guerra. The work will be based both on language and on the deconstruction of the conventions of drama (the unity of time, place, action, the fable, the characters, the dialogue, etc.), creating instead a kind of orchestration of voices, privileging rhythms and games of musical sonority and in which language enters the scene as “text surfaces”, following some of the notions of Lehmann’s post-dramatic theatre, as he will reflect on the heteroglossia proposed by Mikhail Bakhtin, the definition of chora for Julia Kristeva or the theory of presence defended by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, exposing, in a very clear way, a set of divisive political issues that shadow contemporary societies.
