Paços de Ferreira can ‘seal’ the I Liga with victory over Ac.Viseu

For Pacenses, leaders of the second tier, the triumph guarantees – regardless of what the pursuers can do – that finish in the first two places of the classification, which provide the climb.

Paços de Ferreira can ‘seal’ on Saturday the climb to the First Football League, if he wins the reception to the Academician of Viseu, in the 30th round of the Second League, although he can reach the promotion with other results.

For Pacenses, leaders of the second tier, the triumph guarantees – regardless of what the pursuers can do – that finish in the first two places of the classification, which provide the climb.

On Saturday, at 11:00 a victory leaves the Norwegians in the I Liga, as they have a four-point advantage for second-placed Famalicão, from 11 to Benfica B, which does not enter the accounts of the rise, and from 12 to Académica, fourth-placed.

In order to guarantee the promotion, the formation led by Vítor Oliveira needs to win or, if he fails to do so, to at least match the result of the Coimbra team, since there are only 12 points remaining, having an advantage over Académica in direct confrontation.

In the ninth season in the second tier, Paços is close to returning to the Portuguese football division, one year after being relegated, being able to reach the fourth rise in its history.

On all previous occasions, he managed to do more than climb and became the same champion of the II Liga, which happened in 1990/91, 1999/00 and 2004/05, and this season can still exceed his best score in the second step, of 69, obtained from 2005.

For beaver coach Vítor Oliveira, this may be the 11th climb to the top tier, in a record that began precisely with Paços de Ferreira in 1990/91, achieving three more climbs in the 1990s, all in a consecutive way: Academic (1996/97), Union of Leiria (1997/98) and Belenenses (1998/99).

At the turn of the century, the 65-year-old went up to Leixões (2006/07), followed by five consecutive promotions with Arouca (2012/13), Moreirense (2013/14) and Madeira Union (2014/15 ), Desportivo de Chaves (2015/16) and Portimonense (2016/17).

In half of those climbs, Oliveira was the champion in 1991, 1998, 2007, 2014 and 2017, competing this year for the sixth title of the second tier, in a season in which Paços has been in front of the championship since early and has been there.

The leaders, who are even in the worst phase of the season, with four games without a win, seek in the last five days to succeed the Madeira Nacional as champion, cementing the most successful team history in the group.
