Palácio da Fonte Nova, the new venue for events of Penha Longa Catering
It is in an 18th-century estate, in Rio de Mouro, Sintra, that Penha Longa has just inaugurated a new event space. The Palácio da Fonte Nova is exclusively operated by the resort’s catering service, known for hosting memorable events in extraordinary places.
Located amidst a stunning natural setting, characteristic of the Sintra magic, the palace combines elegant architecture with the charm of historically significant places, both in the interiors and in the gardens adorned with fountains, boxwoods, statues, pots, and greenhouses. Full of nooks and crannies, it is the perfect stage for various types of events, from weddings to exclusive celebrations and corporate events.
In this unique place, located just 25km from Lisbon, Penha Longa organizes events for 60 people, with a total capacity of 600 seated and 1,200 standing. With several indoor rooms, three gardens, a courtyard, and above all, a unique beauty, the Palácio da Fonte Nova is extremely versatile and allows for very different celebrations, ensuring that they will always be unforgettable moments.
The Palácio da Fonte Nova joins other exclusive spaces of Penha Longa catering, which now total six, namely: the Alcântara café, in Lisbon; the Casa dos Penedos, in Sintra; the Forte da Cruz, in Estoril; the Mosteiro da Penha Longa; and the Historical Ruins of the Núncio, the last two located within the Penha Longa Resort in Sintra. Additionally, the portfolio includes partner venues, which include distinct places such as the Convento do Beato, the National Palace of Ajuda, the Museum of Coaches, and the Estoril Congress Center.
A HOUSE WITH HISTORY
The history of the Palácio da Fonte Nova dates back to 1743, a date marked on a beam of the house. Until the current owners – an Argentine couple who acquired the property in 2020, during the pandemic – the house changed hands several times. The main house consisted of a ground floor and an upper floor, with a battlement-style platibanda, and it is known that in 1917 major renovations were made with the addition of a floor and interventions to beautify the exterior, giving it a more Portuguese touch, with the introduction of eaves, porches, porticoes, among others, in the style of the time. There is an unidentified image of Our Lady, with the Child and a heart in each hand, which is said to have been found in the vineyard of the estate and is placed on the main altar. The chapel was open for worship. Later, the old cow shed was transformed into a residential house, where religious women settled, becoming known as the Casa de São Vicente. The chapel remained open for worship and agricultural activities developed, with vineyards, horticulture, fruit growing, and livestock, as documented in participation certificates and awards from the Agricultural Fair of Sintra of the time.
