:PAPERCUTZ – Biography

:PAPERCUTZ is a pop-electronic band from the city of Porto, formed and led by Bruno Miguel. The first song appeared in 2008, included in the compilation “Novos Talentos FNAC” which highlights Portuguese music artists, in a selection by Henrique Amaro, from Antena 3 radio. At the same time, the remix of the single “Camaleão” appeared, which would later be included in an E.P. published on Rastilho Records, by the Braga band Peixe:Avião.

In June 2008 they released the single EP entitled “Ultravioleta Rmx’s”. Work highly praised by journalist Nuno Galopim who highlighted “the moment of healthy agitation that the Portuguese pop/rock panorama (and its peripheries) has experienced this year” and in October of the same year the album “Lylac”, both by Canadian label Apegenine Recordings. The work is acclaimed by the national and international press, receiving excellent reviews. “A Secret Search”, one of the songs from “Lylac”, won second prize at the International Songwriting Competition, whose jury was made up of Tom Waits, and Robert Smith, among other notables.

In April 2009, they received an award for the “Off The Beaten Track” category, at The People’s Music Awards, whose ceremony with live concerts took place in London. The jury for this event was made up of Annie Nightingale (BBC Radio DJ), Emre Ramazanoglu (producer associated with Lou Rhodes) and Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM producer). Later, in August :PAPERCUTZ won the “Ones to Watch” award, a Myspace initiative, being the first Portuguese band to achieve this recognition. The promotion of “Lylac” led :PAPERCUTZ to perform live, in 2009 and 2010, on European and United States stages, including at the South by Southwest Festival, in Austin Texas and at the Exit Festival, held in Novi Sad, in Serbia.

The remix album “Do Outro Lado Do Espelho (Lylac Ambient Reworks)” was released in 2010 by the English label Audiobulb Records. The remix of the theme “Lylac”, made by producer and pianist Helios (Keith Kenniff) and the video by Japanese artist Daihei Shibata was awarded at the 2010 edition of Protoclip – Festival International du Clip Musical, in Paris, with its premiere in Portugal in July same year, in the official selection of music videos at the Vila do Conde Short Film Festival. In anticipation of a new album, invitations arose for :PAPERCUTZ to remix songs from other international projects and in particular, for the compilation that celebrated the first anniversary of the English electronic music publication “Future Sequence”, thus giving rise to the reinterpretation of the theme “Disintegration” , from The Cure’s seminal album which was highlighted by well-known radio host, Alan Cross.

The band spent part of 2011 in New York, where they worked with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio). As a result of this collaboration, the second album of originals was born, “The Blur Between Us”, released in July 2012 by the English label Sounds Of A Playground, also featuring a national edition, released in September of the same year by

Rastilho Records. :PAPERCUTZ presented a darker album, in which they featured Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto. Journalist Vítor Belanciano, from the newspaper Público, highlighted the “stimulating pop-electronic with dark contours” while radio host Nuno Ávila considered it one of the best national albums of the year.

Meanwhile, abroad, :PAPERCUTZ received prominence in English and North American periodical publications such as “The Fader”, “MTV”, “Iggy”, and “Dummy Magazine”, among others, and their work was selected by Thierry Vissol for the “Un disco per l’Europa” project, promoted by the European Commission. During the same period, the band returned to play at the South by Southwest festival, also returning to performances in Portugal, with official presentations of the album throughout the country. At the end of 2012, Bruno Miguel was selected for the Red Bull Music Academy, making him return to New York, where he worked in the studio with mentors such as Four Tet or Flying Lotus.

In 2013, :PAPERCUTZ entered a new phase of composition, beginning a collaboration with the label Enchufada, from Buraka Som Sistema, which resulted in the single “Storm Spirits”. Returning to Portugal, they finished the tour of “The Blur Between Us”, which included visits to the Neopop, Fusing, Paredes de Coura festivals, concerts at Casa da Música and other prime venues on the national music circuit. At the end of 2013, the first edition of one of his works took place in Japan, by Kilk Records. Considered album of the month by distributor More Records, this work was highlighted in publications such as “Fudge” being broadcast on Kiss FM KOBE radio stations or FM North Wave, something unprecedented for a foreign band in the Kilk Records catalogue.

It is at this time that Bruno Miguel, in his capacity as producer, has a lot of demand for remixes by international artists such as White Sea (producer and singer of M83), JMSN, and Nite Jewel, among many others.

The group continued with its presentations, having performed for the first time in Asia, at the end of 2016, at the Wonderfruit festival, later returning to the United States for new concerts in Las Vegas, at the Further Future festival, SWSX, and also participating in the Eurosonic conference, representing Portugal and some of the most interesting national projects.

2017 found :PAPERCUTZ releasing their album of originals, entitled “King Ruiner”, unveiling their new sound in new concerts abroad and also in Portugal. The new vocalist, Catarina Miranda, is one of the elements responsible for a different sound approach, evoking pop harmonies and choral motifs found in non-Western geographies.

In 2018, they were chosen as one of the Portuguese bands to be part of #INES talent, a program supported by the European Union that recognizes the value of European groups with the capacity to circulate on the intra-community festival circuit and participate in several industry meetings such as Waves Vienna, Liverpool Soundcity or the well-known Monkey Week where the local press considered them one of the best concerts of the festival and one of the names of new Portuguese music.

In 2019 the project :PAPERCUTZ went on two European tours (Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Poland) going through festivals in the United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Iceland among many others, an artistic residency in New York and were chosen for the European Union program for circulating artists in its space, INES#talent.

In 2020, the group of Portuense producer Bruno Miguel, has new international editions of his album ‘King Ruiner’, a work of black and exotic pop electronica, recorded between Porto, NYC, Hamburg and Tokyo. The new work features several vocalists such as the aforementioned Portuguese Catarina Miranda, in addition to Ferri, a Japanese artist highlighted by Japanese critics in last year’s revelations and the German Lia Bilinski, a singer who has been part of several groups highlighted in the German press. The edition features the publisher responsible for albums by Of Montreal, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Given the pandemic, the international dates in terminal Japan and the entire Asian tour as the first shows in China are cancelled.
