Paralamas do Sucesso and Detonautas live in Portugal
July 9, Jardins do Marquês - Oeiras Valley and July 10, Super Bock Arena - Porto
Portugal will host two of the greatest bands of Brazilian rock in double dose: Paralamas do Sucesso and Detonautas, on July 9th at the Festival Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley, on July 10th at the Super Bock Arena in Porto.
PARALAMAS DO SUCESSO
The Paralamas do Sucesso, now formed by Herbert Vianna, Bi Ribeiro and João Barone, are one of the most iconic bands in Brazilian music, reflecting the spirit of their generation over four decades. They took their first steps in the 80s, as part of the revolution of then-Brazilian rock, and soon stood out by combining the influences of Anglo-American rock with Latin and Brazilian elements, creating a unique style.
Initially, they were known for hits like “Vital and His Bike” and with such remarkable records as “Cinema Mudo”, “O Passo do Lui” and “Selvagem?” that, in this last case, mixed rock with reggae and Caribbean sounds. The band has become international with concerts all over Latin America, but also in the United States and Europe, including a remarkable performance at the Montreux Festival. In addition, they innovated musically with the use of metals in “Bora-Bora” or electronic experiments on discs like “Os Grãos” or “Severino”.
The Paralamas have always sought to reinvent themselves throughout their career and that’s exactly what happened with the album “Longo Caminho”, demonstrating resilience and reaffirming its inexhaustible creative force. Recently, the band celebrated their 30 and 40 years of career with tours and special projects, such as the album “Sinais do Sim”, which brought messages of empathy, as well as another musical renewal. Among the latest highlights is the concert at Lollapalooza 2023, considered one of the best of the festival. With renewed energy, the Paralamas are active and relevant, consolidating their legacy of innovation and deep connection to the public, and influencing several generations of music lovers.
DETONAUTAS
The Detonautas are one of the most striking bands of Brazilian rock in the last 20 years. The group gained prominence in the 2000s, uniting rock and pop with lyrics that address both social criticism and introspective themes. The band started unusually: its members met in chat rooms on the internet. This origin even inspired the name “Detonautas”, a fusion of “detonators” and “netizens”. After the first virtual meetings, musicians began to meet to compose and play in events in Rio de Janeiro.
The debut album, “Detonautas Roque Clube” (2002), brought hits like “Outro Lugar” and “Quando o Sol Se For”. In 2004, the second album “Roque Marciano” consolidated the success of the group with hits like “Right Eyes” and “The Day That Did Not End”. The next step, “Psicodeliamorsexo&distorção” (2006), presented a more experimental sound and reflective lyrics, marking the beginning of a more politicized posture of the band.
Albums like “The Return of Saturn” (2008) explored themes such as inequality, violence and corruption, reaffirming the social consciousness of the band. More recent albums like “Viemos em Paz” (2014) and “Álbum Laranja” (2017) have confirmed the band as one of the most important in Brazilian rock. The group is recognized for its authenticity, proximity to fans and cultural impact.
In the words of Tico Santta Cruz, vocalist of Detonautas:
“This return to Portugal in a great festival like the one of Oeiras is the opportunity that Detonautas has to show all its power, its Hits, its intensity for thousands of people and consecrate once our relationship with the country and with the Portuguese and all other Portuguese-speaking citizens. We’re going to get on that stage as if we were in the Champions League final.”
