Parque Terra Nostra, one of the most emblematic and visited botanical gardens in the Azores, has just renewed the prestigious title of International Camellia Garden of Excellence until 2034.
This recognition, granted by the International Camellia Society, reaffirms Parque Terra Nostra as a space of global excellence, highlighting it as a reference in the field of botany and a symbol of the preservation and appreciation of camellias.
The title, which is only awarded to gardens with camellia collections notable for their quality, diversity and historical relevance, highlights Parque Terra Nostra’s commitment to promoting the conservation and study of this botanical species. With a collection of more than 800 varieties of camellias, the garden becomes a meeting point for lovers and researchers from all over the world.
Parque Terra Nostra has been a private property of the Bensaude family since 1936. It is about to celebrate 250 years of history and currently has a team of 19 gardeners, a head gardener and two agronomy technicians, who contribute daily to the preservation of one of the richest botanical heritage in Portugal.
Camellias have been part of Parque Terra Nostra since at least 1910. The oldest camellia in the park is estimated to be 114 years old, being accompanied by several other plants of similar age and historical importance, in an area that occupies approximately 19 thousand m². In total, there are 2,720 georeferenced camellias, distributed across five distinct thematic areas, along historic paths and close to the lake.
To celebrate this milestone, Florescer das Camélias 2025 will open on February 22nd and will run until March 22nd, marked by the traditional Furnas Camélias Exhibition. This annual event brings together the best of Azorean culture and botany, promoting not only the camellias but also the uniqueness of the archipelago’s natural heritage.
