Pastor announces Pope’s visit to Mozambique in 2019

The parish priest of Maputo Cathedral, Giorgio Ferreti, announced today that Pope Francisco will visit Mozambique later this year, the first papal visit to the country since 1988.

I’m going to tell you a secret,” said Giorgio Ferreti, “to the faithful who were in the cathedral”.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi invited Pope Francisco to go to Mozambique during a visit to the Vatican in September last year and ended up breaking protocol rules by announcing a possible visit to journalists.

Although there is not yet a date for the visit of the leader of the Catholic Church, the AFP said that September was suggested as a “plausible date” and that the trip should also include Madagascar.

The last visit of a pope to Mozambique took place in 1988 with John Paul II, who at the time could verify the devastation caused by the prolonged civil war.
