Patrícia Sampaio wins gold and Rochele Nunes silver in judo
Portuguese judoka Patrícia Sampaio won the gold medal in the -78 kg category today at the Oceania Open, a competition held in Perth in which Rochele Nunes won silver at +78 kg.
With three judokas in action on the last day of the Open, Yahima Ramirez was seventh, also at -78 kg, and Patricia Sampaio and Rochele Nunes joined Maria Siderot on the podium after winning silver on Sunday. -48 kg.
Today, the first medal went to Patrícia Sampaio (18th in the world), with the judoka from Tomar following the recent good results and winning four matches, all for ‘ippon’, until reaching the gold against the German Luise Malzahn (ninth in the ranking).
Patricia Sampaio, 20, was recently a bronze medalist in the Junior World Championships, after being the second European Champion of the same rank in September.
Rochele Nunes, who was third in the Brasilia Grand Slam in early October, reached the silver medal today after winning three matches and losing in the final with Turkish Kayra Sayit for ‘ippon’.
The Benfica judoka is in qualifying for the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games, with Portugal having athletes in almost all women’s weight categories (Catarina Costa at -48 kg, Joana Ramos at -52 kg, Telma Monteiro at -57kg, Barbara Timo at -70kg, Patricia Sampaio at -78kg and Rochele at + 78kg).
In the men’s sector, only Anri Egutidze (-81kg) and world champion Jorge Fonseca (-100kg) are in place of Olympic qualifying, with qualification ending in May 2020.
