Portuguese driver Paulo Gonçalves died in the seventh stage of the Dakar 2020 following a crash, the organization said.
“Paulo Gonçalves, racing on motorbike no. 8, has passed away from a sustained fall 276 kilometres into today’s special. The organizers received an alert at 10:08 am and dispatched a medical helicopter that reached the biker at 10:16 am and found him unconscious after going into cardiac arrest. Following resuscitation efforts in situ, the competitor was taken by helicopter to Layla Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. ” read in the Dakar organization statement.
Paulo Gonçalves, who was competing in the 13th Dakar in his career, started this adventure in 2006 and finished 4 times in the top 10 of this difficult race, was World Rally Champion in 2013. It ranked 46th overall in the Dakar2020 at the end of the sixth stage.
