Pearl Jam announce new album, Dark Matter

in stores on April 19th and available for pre-order now

The group returns this year to the NOS Alive festival on July 13th

Pearl Jam will release their twelfth studio album, Dark Matter, on April 19, 2024 and will begin a 35-date world tour in May, which will take place at the NOS Alive festival on July 13.

The song that gives the album its title is now available here. Produced by GRAMMY® award-winning producer Andrew Watt, Dark Matter is the band’s first original album since 2020’s acclaimed Gigaton.

In 2023, the members of Pearl Jam – Eddie Vedder [vocals], Jeff Ament [bass], Stone Gossard [guitar], Mike McCready [guitar] and Matt Cameron [drums] – retired to Shangri-La Studios, in Malibu, where they began playing with producer Andrew Watt at the helm of production.

The musicians faced each other in the same space and communicated at the highest level of sound. Having composed and recorded in a burst of inspiration, Dark Matter was born in just three weeks.

As a result, Dark Matter channels the shared spirit of a group of long-time creative and confidant brothers in a room, who played their instruments as if their very lives depended on it. All the blood, sweat, tears and energy of a storied career have been renewed and poured into this body of work.

The band members personally performed the album at a party at the iconic Troubadour in West Hollywood during GRAMMY® Awards week:

Vedder said: “I have goosebumps because I have good memories. We are still looking for ways to communicate. We are at this point in our lives where we may or may not do this, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful and hopefully consider it to be our best work. Without exaggeration, I think this is our best work.”

Ament added: “What Ed said about us getting together in a room right now, we felt like we were about to make a really important record. A lot of it had to do with the atmosphere that Andrew created. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of our history, not only as a band and how we write songs but as musicians. He could identify things we did in old songs to the point where I thought, ‘What the hell is he talking about?’ His enthusiasm was infectious. He is a force. I just want to thank you for keeping us on the right path. I couldn’t be more proud of us as a band. I feel very grateful for the fans, but especially for my brothers and these people I made music with.”

The band will celebrate independent record stores with the release of a special edition of Dark Matter on April 20th. Only at participating stores as part of Record Store Day. Get more information and find stores at www.recordstoreday.com.

The packaging for the Dark Matter album features light painting work by Alexandr Gnezdilov. Light painting is an artistic form of photography where images are created by adjusting the camera’s exposure over a long period and using a light source, such as a flashlight, to “paint” in the dark. The album cover was created using a large self-made kaleidoscope. Each letter visible on the cover was individually captured and handwritten in the air with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect.
