Pedro Abrunhosa at Coliseu dos Recreios
A Magnificent Concert featuring Cante Alentejano by the Peasants of Pias
‘A.M.O.R’ started this Friday with a magnificent concert, Pedro Abrunhosa and his God, inspired the minds, and sensations of each one.
Known for being unknown, and mysterious in his light blue blazer and dark glasses, Pedro writes songs about life, about love felt, lived and lost, tragedies and hopes.
It was a concert, where his political message also appeared ‘… perhaps one of the greatest political acts is participation in a show, good night and thank you for coming…’ it was with these words that Pedro Abrunhosa thanked a full house.
The Theme ‘Que o Amor Te salve nesta Noite Escura’ was written in the wake of ‘Russia’s barbaric aggression against Ukraine’ and the ‘Balada de Gisberta’ was written 16 years ago after the horrific murder of ‘Gisberta‘, ‘…woman foreign, strange, with all her weaknesses exposed, killed by 4 children aged 13 and 14, just because she was weaker. …’ The song ‘Balada de Gisberta’ is Pedro’s desire for the violence to end.
This concert also honors his parents, who left two years ago, having loved each other for 70 years, a lifetime. Rui Nabeiro is honored, a Portuguese businessman who lived and grew rich, always helping the people. It honors the mothers of Ukraine and Russia who see their children forced to go to war.
Pedro Abrunhosa is not a singer, he is an extraordinary interpreter, a lived-in man, a man of the world, who brings his own life experiences to the stage.
‘Deixas em Mim Tanto de Ti’, ‘Momento’, and ‘Ó Minha Mãe’ were heard at the Coliseu, with the intervention of ‘Os Camponeses de Pias’.
Camponeses de Pias, directed by Paulo Ribeiro, brought Cante Alentejano to that Coliseu stage, considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, for the way it is sung and felt, the musicality, the depth of their voices, perfectly match the feelings of Abrunhosa’s lyrics.
Abrunhosa tells us that ‘…after an international tour, London, Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, these concerts now land in Portugal, at the Coliseums, (for them, Pedro Abrunhosa and the Peasants of Pias), brought the root, the trunk the branch, the harvest, the leaf and the fruit that is a country, that’s what Culture is, we had the notion, of the dignity and depth of what our ‘Cultural Identity’ is…’.
Among other stories, we heard the themes‘Tenho Saudades, mais Nada’, ‘Fazer o que Ainda não Foi Feito’, ‘Se Eu fosse um Dia o Teu Olhar’, ‘É Preciso ter Calma’, and ‘Acima & Abaixo’.
In the coliseum, a new song was heard, which has not yet been released, that Pedro wrote during the pandemic, dedicated to three great friends of his, who lost their children during this scourge. It reveals that there is no feeling, there are no words for these moments, unless, as Pedro says, through music, purging the pain through music.
‘Leva-me para Casa, faz de Mim o Teu Começo’ was exceptional, Coliseu standing, here and there, tears flowed, feelings and longing, which joined those parents and all the parents who lost their children because of the pandemic.
In the midst of so much feeling, Pedro almost changed the order of the songs, jokingly justifies ‘it’s what you get by wearing sunglasses’, and once again reveals his political revolt in the following song, which he wrote against those who, ‘democratically elected ‘, are capable of sinking boats with migrants, who only intend to escape the war, live and work in Peace, we hear ‘Amor em Tempo de Muros’.
This was followed by ‘Devias vir Salva-me’, the second new song, which has not yet been released and which Pedro premieres at the Lisbon Coliseu; his version of ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘I Can’t Take It Anymore’.
Another spectacular moment was the mixed songs ‘Socorro’ with ‘Staying a Live’, very cute, to dance to.
‘Ilumina-me’ lifted the entire Coliseu, with their cell phone lights on, for an epic, chilling moment.
Pedro Abrunhosa was on stage with Comité Caviar, the voices of Patrícia Silveira and Patrícia Antunes, Camponeses de Pias, and the chilling voice of a young boy, Rodrigo Aleixo, who, despite his age, manages to convey everything.
In the midst of the final apotheosis, Pedro Abrunhosa is called to the stage, and together with the Camponeses de Pias the night comes to an end to the sound of ‘Lavoura’, ‘Alentejo, Alentejo’, ‘Para os braços da minha Mãe’ with the extraordinary voice of Rodrigo Aleixo, ‘Lua’ and even finishing ‘Tudo Que Te Dou’.
It was a concert that will certainly remain in the memory of all those who participated in the Coliseu, the stories of Pedro Abrunhosa, the music of Comité Caviar, the voices of Patrícia Silveira and Patrícia Santos and Cante Alentejano, Camponeses de Pias.
