Pedro Costa awarded in Chicago

Pedro Costa’s ‘Vitalina Varela’ was the winner of the ‘Silver Hugo’, the jury prize of the Chicago Film Festival.

It was announced in a statement by Midas Filmes, this award comes after the film also wins the grand prize at the La Roche-su-Yon Film Festival in France.

In a note on the Chicago Film Festival website, it mentions that the movie ‘Vitalina Varela’ has earned the award for having a ‘sweeping and masterful vision between horror and melodrama, spirituality and despair’.

Already the main prize of the international feature film competition went to the French film ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’, by Céline Sciamma.

‘Vitalina Varela’ which premiered in August at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland and won the Golden Leopard and the Leopard for the best female performance for the protagonist.

The film, which can be seen by the Portuguese from the 31st, on the commercial circuit, cinemas and municipal auditoriums, tells the story of a Cape Verdean woman who lived part of her life waiting to come to her husband, Joaquim, a migrant in Portugal, but only comes three days after the funeral.
