Pedro Costa’s film won in two categories of the International Cinephile Society awards

“Vitalina Varela” by Pedro Costa doubly awarded by the International Cinephile Society for Best Actress and Best Photography

The Portuguese film “Vitalina Varela”, by Pedro Costa, won in two categories Best Actress and Best Photography at the International Cinephile Society (ICS) awards, which brings together 120 critics, journalists, academics and festival organizers from around the world.

The winners of the International Cinephile Society awards were announced on the official group website that brings together more than 120 industry professionals, film professors, historians, critics and specialist journalists from more than three dozen countries, on all continents.

Vitalina Varela, the protagonist of the film, won in the category of Best Actress, in which were also nominated, among others, Scarlett Johansson, for “Marriage Story”, and Lupita Nyong’o, with the film “Us”.

For the organization, Vitalina Varela showed surprising power and grace as a Cape Verdean widow who is discovering some hard truths about the immigrant life of her late husband in Portugal.

In the category of Best Photography, Leonardo Simões was distinguished for his dark and poetic atmosphere, thus passing Roger Deakins, nominated for the film “1917”

“Vitalina Varela” is, for ICS, one of the 25 best films of 2019.

The film had its world premiere in August last year at the Locarno Film Festival, in Switzerland, where it won the main awards of the event: Golden Leopard and Leopard for Best Female Interpretation.

Since then, it has been shown and received several awards at several international film festivals.
