Portuguese artists Pedro Neves Marques and Margarida Mendes will participate in the 4th edition of the Istanbul Design Biennial, between September 22 and November 4, announced the Camões Institute.
The event, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Art (IKSV), has the support of the Camões Institute and the Portuguese Embassy in Ankara.
The Bienal, with the theme ‘A school of schools’, curated by Jan Boelen, and besides the Portuguese presence of the two artists, will also have Vera Sacchetti, curator and critic of design.
Since 2012, the Istanbul Design Biennial aims – according to the online site – to bring together a wide range of creators from this area, fostering creativity and dialogue between the creative and academic communities.
The biennial has been operating in a national and international network, collaborating with cultural agents, institutions, university and companies.
Using the city as a dynamic space for projects, actions and interventions, the event addresses the global problems of design, stimulates criticism and debate, and explores less talked about aspects of everyday life in society.
This year’s commissioner, Jan Boelen, born in Belgium in 1967, is the artistic director of Z33 House for Contemporary Art in Hasselt, Belgium, and the LUMA studio, a design studio in Arles, France.
He is also head of the Department of Social Design at the Eindhoven Design Academy in the Netherlands.
