Pedro Pichardo won the gold medal in the triple-jump contest at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The Portuguese athlete of Cuban origin led the contest from the first jump and ended with a huge advantage over the most direct opponents, more specifically 41 centimeters (17.57 meters) over the Chinese silver medalist Yaming Zhu.
Pichardo took 17.98 meters in the third test, that is, over 18 meters, which guaranteed him a new national record and the title of Olympic champion.
Hugues Fabrice Zango, from Burkina Faso, managed 17.47 meters and won the bronze medal.
It is the fourth medal for Portugal in Tokyo, the best participation ever, the first gold since the triumph of Nélson Évora in Beijing-2008.
