Perto, where jazz is seduced by Portuguese music

by the talented Cristina Branco and Mário Laginha in the company of the Hot Clube Jazz Orchestra

Yesterday the Tivoli BBVA Theater hosted the concert that Mário Laginha and Cristina Branco did with the prestigious Bigband from Rádio Frankfurt, in which they presented Portuguese music with arrangements for a jazz orchestra, this time they were accompanied by the no less incredible Orquestra de Jazz do Hot Club.

Cristina Branco is one of the Portuguese fado singers most acclaimed by critics and cherished by the public who, all over the world, have marvelled at her performances full of emotion.

Born in Almeirim, on December 28, 1972, she has deep roots in traditional Portuguese music, in jazz, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Joni Mitchell were her first role models and of course in fado after on her eighteenth birthday her grandfather gave her having offered an album by Amália Rodrigues and it was with this symbiosis that Cristina entered the national song, accompanied by the Portuguese guitar, piano and double bass.

Her latest album, titled Mãe, was released in 2023 and features tracks such as “Senhora do Mar Redondo”, “Folha em Branco” and “Essa Tristeza”, among others, which are references to Portuguese music.

Mário Laginha, one of the greatest Portuguese jazz pianists who has memorable collaborations with Camané in fado, was born in Lisbon on April 25, 1960, and is a Portuguese pianist and composer acclaimed as one of the biggest names in European jazz.

Recognized for his technical mastery, creative improvisation, and deep musical sensitivity, Laginha has achieved a prominent place in the international jazz scene and beyond.

Influenced by big names like Keith Jarrett, Laginha developed a unique style combining traditional jazz elements with African music’s rhythms and sounds. This cultural fusion is evident in his compositions and improvisations, giving his music a richness and originality that distinguishes him from his peers.

Throughout his illustrious career, Laginha has collaborated with several renowned musicians, including Portuguese jazz singer Maria João, with whom he has recorded over a dozen albums and undertaken highly successful international tours. Other notable collaborations include four-hand piano sessions with Bernardo Sassetti and Pedro Burmester.

Mário Laginha’s exceptional talent was recognized with several awards and honours, including the Order of Public Instruction of Portugal. In 1993, he composed the original soundtrack for the film “Passagem por Lisboa” by filmmaker Eduardo Geada. In 1994, he released his first solo album, Hoje, followed by Danças, which began his lasting collaboration with Maria João.

At the invitation of Rádio Frankfurt Bigband, to present Portuguese music in concert with arrangements for jazz orchestra, Mário Laginha and Luís Figueiredo, made the arrangements including songs by Cristina Branco, but also songs from Portuguese popular music and Zeca Afonso, which culminates in a wonderful concert.

At the Tivoli concert, Mário Laginha and Cristina Branco were accompanied by the incredible Hot Clube de Portugal Jazz Orchestra, directed by Pedro Moreira, who amazed the audience.
