The Pessoa 2018 Prize, an award that recognizes “the activity of Portuguese people with a significant role in the cultural and scientific life of the country,” will be announced on December 14, the organization announced.
The Pessoa Award, worth 60,000 euros, is an initiative of the weekly Expresso and Caixa Geral de Depósitos and the winner of the 32nd. the edition will be revealed by the jury at the Palace of Seteais in Sintra.
“The Pessoa Award intends to represent a new attitude, a new gesture, in the contemporary recognition of the cultural and scientific interventions produced by Portuguese,” the organization said in a press release.
Applications for the prize are due on 23 November.
In 2017, the Pessoa Prize was awarded to the architect Manuel Aires Mateus (in the photograph), with the jury highlighting “modern, abstract and contemporary architecture”, present in projects such as the Contemporary Creation Center in Tours and EDP’s headquarters in Lisbon.
The Pessoa Prize was awarded for the first time in 1987 to the historian José Mattoso.
The pianist Maria João Pires, the archaeologist Cláudio Torres, the writers José Cardoso Pires and Mário Cláudio, the director Luis Miguel Cintra, the historian Irene Flunser Pimentel and the sculptor Rui Chafes have also been awarded the Pessoa Prize.
