Piaget de Gaia establishes alliance with 33 healthcare institutions to train highly specialized nurses in the north of the country

The partnership encompasses referral hospitals, local healthcare units, and residential care facilities, aiming to address a serious shortage of professionals in the medical-surgical and mental health fields.

The Piaget de Gaia School of Health has just established an unprecedented agreement with 33 healthcare institutions in the North region, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening the qualifications of nurses specialising in the most critical areas of the system: Medical-Surgical Nursing and Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

In a context of growing clinical demand and a shortage of human resources, this alliance will allow healthcare professionals already in the field to access master’s degrees with advantageous conditions—up to 25% off tuition fees—increasing their training to work in highly complex settings and with mental health distress.

“This is a significant step in the integration between higher education and the healthcare sector. We want not only to train highly qualified professionals but also to directly respond to the specific needs of the country’s healthcare system, especially in a region with significant healthcare pressures like the North,” says Margarida Ferreira, director of the Piaget School of Health in Gaia.

The three master’s programs offered—Medical-Surgical Nursing – Persons in Critical Conditions, Medical-Surgical Nursing – Persons in Chronic Conditions, and Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing—are a direct response to serious gaps identified in hospital and community settings.

The institutions involved in the agreement include hospitals such as São João, IPO do Porto, Hospital da Luz, Lusíadas, Trofa Saúde, Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, and other local healthcare units operating in densely populated areas with high healthcare demands.
