From Lisbon to the World: The world’s largest sustainable innovation event reached thousands of people online and 2,000 passed through the two days at Altice Arena. The Planetiers World Gathering will become annual.
Planetiers World Gathering was accompanied by more than 10,000 participants worldwide. The hybrid conference thus connected thousands of specialists and stakeholders in the area of sustainable innovation from around the world to another 2,000 spent two days at Altice Arena. These figures confirm the conference as the largest sustainable innovation event in the world despite the pandemic moment.
Planetiers World Gathering was a success and is here to stay. During the conference, the organization confirmed that this is the first in a series of annual events that will have based in Lisbon. Planetiers World Gathering is organized in partnership with Douro Generation and Altice Arena.
According to Sérgio Ribeiro, Founder and CEO of Planetiers, “the first edition of Planetiers World Gathering was a success and we are very happy to be able to contribute to highlight the issues as relevant to our future as environmental, economic and environmental sustainability of humanity ”. “We want this to be the first of many Planetiers World Gathering and that the result of this event will bring clear benefits for the future of all of us ”.
The second day of Planetiers World Gathering is also marked by the coming to Lisbon from Daymond John, a conservationist and well-known ‘shark’ from the Shark Thank USA, who, during his intervention said: “I learned a lot from Shark Tank, that today’s consumer wants to know what we are doing ”and acknowledged addressing the Planetiers audience that“ you are Sharks like me, the only difference is that I always have cameras behind me ”.
He advised the audience and Planetiers around the world to “set goals, to study the lesson well, to have a love for yourself, but even more for your family, to remember that each of us is a brand and, finally, always continue to ‘swim’ ”in an allusion to your Shark brand. Daymond John also defended that “we don’t invest in companies, we invest in people … always remember that you are personally the brand ”.
Other speakers at the two-day event included Professor Mohan Munasinghe, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, Gunter Pauli Blue Economy author Mathis Wackernagel, Global Footprint Network founder and creator of the Ecological Footprint concept, David Orban, investor and advisor at Singularity University and Gustavo Carona, of Doctors Without Borders, Gina McCarthy, former administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency, Mike Berners-Lee, author of the bestseller ‘There is No Planet B’, Francisco Piyãko, leader of the people Ashaninka from Amazonia, Brazil, Edgard Gouveia Jr., Bio-architect and urban planner, Adam Woodhall, Extinction Rebellion representative, among others.
Planetiers World Gathering aims to promote real changes and highlight sustainability issues across society. The hybrid event consisted of a stage main venue that hosts several debates and discussion panels, next to a virtual auditorium, innovation studios and a generation workshop.
Participants had the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into issues related to food waste, social inequalities, climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity and more. It was also a unique opportunity to discuss the extent to which COVID-19 impacted the phenomenon of environmental change.
For security reasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of face-to-face participants has been greatly reduced from a maximum capacity of 20,000 a day to just 1,000 a day in order to ensure safe circulation and social distance within the arena. The conference combined a physical and online experience into a new hybrid event model that allows it to run on the desired scale ensuring total security.
